Women in Combat
Laura Browder, an American Studies professor and program coordinator, is the author of When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Women Combat Veterans. Browder interviewed and collected the stories of 52 women on the front lines of war.
"Many Americans don’t quite realize how much the lives of female service members have changed. After all, up until the late ’70s, women in the Army had to take etiquette classes. They had make-up class in basic training, and they were encouraged to wear gloves whenever they went into town because they needed to present the right image. In Iraq and Afghanistan, women were busting down doors and doing house-to house searches, serving as convoy gunners and flying B-52s. However, our country has not fully grappled with the implications of women’s service."
